Pet-Pledge - Abandonment, Rescue and Redemption

This story begins with a little girl called Katie, expressing her desire for a kitten as a birthday gift from her father, who's called David. Touched by Katie's request, David sets out to find a kitten for her.

On his way to the pet shop, David takes a short-cut through a neglected part of town with boarded-up shops and debris strewn across the streets. The area used to be a thriving mechanical engineering hub. Since the economic downturn 5 years ago, the area quickly deteriorated.

Please don't leave me!

Amidst this desolation as David drives slowly along a street, he spots a frail, black and white kitten in a disused shop doorway, close to death. Lying there with it's eyes half closed, it meows as loudly as it can, as if to say, "Please don't leave me!" Moved by compassion, David stops the car, and walks quickly over to the doorway. He carefully picks up the kitten, and walks back to the car. He makes a makeshift bed from his maroon fleece jacket, nestles the poor kitten onto the fleece, and brings it home.

Arriving home David carefully brings the kitten into the kitchen. He tends to the weak kitten hoping to bring it back to health with warmed milk, showing compassion and dedication. When Katie discovers her dad with the rescued kitten, David tells her of its dire condition and his need to save the life of the kitten who was on the brink of death.

She's so proud of her daddy and what he's done!

Katie, influenced by the heroes and villains in cartoons she watches, immediately recognises her father's selfless act as true heroism. She's so proud of her daddy and what he's done. She asks him if she can help.

Together, David and Katie nurse the kitten back to health. They gently wash her dirty matted fur with warm water, and clean away the muck from her cute little face. She meows every minute like she's saying 'Thank you!".

Katie decides to call the kitten 'Wish'

Over a week or so, the kitten started to recover. Katie fed her morsels of food as well as a regular supply of warm milk to drink. Katie decides to call the kitten 'Wish'. Slowly Wish started to gain strength and crawl around a little. Katie would carefully brush Wish's fur, which she seemed to like. Wish would meow evertime Katie stopped brushing, prompting her to brush some more.

A trip to the vets

As soon as Wish the kitten made healthy progress toward normality, David and Katie take a trip to the local vets. It's important to have Wish vaccinated and checked over for underlying health issues, just to make sure she's okay.

David also took Katie to a local animal shelter. He wanted her to gain a better understanding about the abandonment situation. As Emily walked through the crowded animal shelter, she noticed row after row of cages filled with cats and kittens, their eyes reflecting a mix of curiosity and sadness.The shelter staff sighed as they passed the feline enclosures, murmuring about the overwhelming number of abandoned cats they had taken in lately.

The experience of saving Wish empowers David and his daughter Katie. David wanted to instill in his daughter, a sense of responsibility and commitment, to ensuring the kitten's well-being for the rest of its life. Katie learned, even though she was still young, about values that really matter when certain circumstances prevail.

What really matters

When the responsibility falls to us to save a life, that life becomes more valuable than anything you buy from a shop. It makes us stop and think about what really matters.

This heartwarming story highlights the shift from mere desire to meaningful action and the joy that comes from making a difference in the life of a vulnerable creature.

Adopting a kitten or cat from a shelter, means the world to that creature. Many of them will have been through a harrowing journey before they get to the shelter, just like the story above. Added to that it will be helping the shelter.
